Tango/Open Jazz Feel

Douglas Little’s composition I arranged by commission of Giacomo Aula (p) for the Berlin Big Band keeps changing between a tango-feel and an open jazz feel. The melody reminds us of the ballads of the great Astor Piazolla. Feature for alto 1 and piano.

Duration ca. 10 min
After the woodwind intro soprano sax and guitar play the head. The solo-part is open for several soloists. Flutes, clarinets and percussion dominate the sound of the minimalistic interlude, where time seems to float and which offers space for a tenor solo. The backings played by woodwinds, trombones, flugelhorns and percussion lead to the coda, which pays tribute to the head. Finally, the piece comes to an end in the outro, solely played by guitar and piano. An ambitioned piece for ambitioned bands.

Ballad/5/4-Rock Groove/Bossa Nova
Duration ca. 12 min
The minor melody is stated first as a ballad then in a 5/4 rock groove. Solos are played over minor blues harmonies and are followed by a virtuoso sax soli. The melody comes back in a trumpet fortissimo, before everything turns fine in a soft bossa outro.
